GST compliance failures and electricity subsidy controls raise allegations of financial irregularities and potential losses to the public exchequer.
Allegations based on a Comptroller and Auditor General report identified purported GST compliance failures involving outstanding tax liabilities, e-way bills generated after cancellation of GST registrations, limited bill scrutiny, non-compliance, and turnover mismatches. The allegations also concerned electricity subsidies extended to consumers with prolonged zero bills or apparent non-residence, presenting these issues as possible financial irregularities and losses to the public exchequer.

Money-laundering prosecution complaints allege fund diversion through shell entities, credit-facility evergreening, layered transactions and fictitious project expenditure.
Money-laundering prosecution complaints allege that funds from toll-road projects and credit facilities were diverted through group companies, contractors, shell entities and conduit accounts. In the toll-road matter, allegedly sham or back-dated subcontracting arrangements and subsequent documentation were used to portray transfers as genuine project expenditure. In the credit-facilities matter, fresh facilities were allegedly used to repay, rotate and evergreen earlier liabilities rather than for sanctioned end-use, with funds layered and presented as legitimate business expenditure or receipts. Attached assets are sought to be confiscated as alleged proceeds of crime.

Direct Benefit Transfer pension disbursement replaces cooperative-bank doorstep delivery, while preserving home payments for beneficiaries unable to use bank accounts.
Direct Benefit Transfer of social security and welfare pensions to Aadhaar-linked bank accounts is intended to replace cooperative-bank doorstep delivery, except for bedridden and similarly situated beneficiaries. The change addresses delays in remitting undistributed pensions, deficient record updates and reconciliation, duplicate payments, delivery incentives, and compliance with Direct Benefit Transfer norms. Criticism focuses on beneficiary access to linked commercial-bank accounts, possible minimum-balance deductions, exclusion of cooperative banks, and the effect on doorstep-delivery workers.

Savings account selection requires comparison of effective interest, fees, digital service, access, and individual banking needs.
Savings-account selection should compare effective interest returns under slab-based rates, recurring operating charges and the customer's actual banking needs. Net value depends not only on advertised rates but also on relevant minimum-balance, card, ATM, alert and transfer fees. Digital reliability, customer support, branch availability and ATM access should be assessed according to the customer's average balance, cash use, transfer frequency, travel patterns and need for in-person assistance. The suitable account is one that matches real banking behaviour.

Illegal immigration enforcement prioritises dismantling entry, documentation and employment networks while requiring citizens to report information through police channels.
Illegal immigration enforcement involves continuous identification and verification operations, coordination with relevant officials, and confidential investigation of networks facilitating entry, identity documentation, accommodation and employment. Enquiries extend to intermediaries, contractors, Aadhaar procurement and verification practices, rather than focusing only on apprehended individuals. Citizen vigilantism, moral policing and social-media targeting of suspected migrants are discouraged because they may compromise investigations; information should instead be given through proper police channels.

Foreign capital inflows supported the rupee despite geopolitical uncertainty, oil-price pressures, and volatile global market sentiment.
Foreign capital inflows supported a marginal strengthening of the rupee against the US dollar despite global risk aversion arising from uncertainty surrounding negotiations affecting the Strait of Hormuz. Higher crude oil prices and weak domestic equity sentiment remained relevant pressures. Near-term currency movement was expected to depend on developments in the negotiations, weekend decisions, US employment data, the dollar index, crude oil prices, and the reported increase in foreign exchange reserves.

Energy security through diversified sourcing protected fuel supplies during Hormuz disruption and supports domestic exploration and alternative fuels.
Energy security measures based on diversified crude oil and LPG sourcing, expanded infrastructure, increased domestic LPG production and alternative fuels were presented as maintaining fuel availability during disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Domestic resilience is also linked to support for private deep-water oil and gas exploration, opening offshore acreage, and expansion of compressed biogas and ethanol blending. Ethanol-blended petrol testing identified limited contamination instances rather than a systemic issue, while excise duty reductions were described as cushioning consumers against global fuel-price volatility.

Foreign exchange reserves rose as foreign currency assets, gold holdings, Special Drawing Rights and IMF reserve position increased.
India's foreign exchange reserves increased during the week ended July 31, principally because of higher foreign currency assets and gold reserves. Foreign currency assets include US dollar valuation effects arising from movements in currencies such as the euro, pound and yen. Special Drawing Rights and India's reserve position with the International Monetary Fund also increased. The movement followed measures to attract foreign exchange inflows, including an FCNR(B) measure, after earlier reserve declines associated with rupee pressure and dollar sales for foreign exchange market intervention.

Kyiv, Jul 15 (AP) Ukrainians welcomed US President Donald Trump's pledge of more US-made weapons in their three-year fight against Russia's invasion, though it is unclear what exactly they will get and how quickly.

The time frame for the further arms deliveries, which European countries have agreed to pay for, is crucial. Russia is making a summer push to break through along the 1,000-km front line, and its drones and missiles are hammering Ukrainian cities more than at any time in the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Trump for his “willingness to support Ukraine”. In Kyiv, resident Nina Tokar, 70, said Tuesday that with more US weapons going to Ukraine “maybe this will all end faster”.

However, following Trump's threat late last week to impose major sanctions on Russia for failing to reach a deal to end the fighting, the American president said Monday that Moscow would get 50 days to come to a settlement or face “very severe” economic sanctions.

While some believe strict tariffs on Moscow could be a game changer, the decision to postpone them until September struck some European observers as being too long. Ukrainian officials made no direct comment about the 50-day window, but for Russia, the delay of new sanctions came as a reprieve.

Senior Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev commented: “Oh, how much can change both on the battlefield and with the mood of those leading the US and NATO in 50 days.” Russian President Vladimir Putin hasn't budged when presented with previous U.S. deadlines and threats. In an interview with the BBC broadcast Tuesday, Trump said of Putin: “I'm disappointed in him, but I'm not done with him.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow “would like to understand what is behind this statement about 50 days,” noting that the Kremlin has offered to continue direct peace talks with Ukraine.

“Earlier, there were also the deadlines of 24 hours and of 100 days,” Lavrov said during an official trip to China. “We've seen it all and really would like to understand the motivation of the US president.” An assessment published Tuesday by Chatham House noted that “the exact details of what has been agreed remain hazy.” “Putin will continue to judge Trump by his actions, not by his words — and so far, there is little enough action to be seen,” the London-based think tank said.

Military experts are trying to figure out whether Russian forces could use the window left by Trump to achieve significant territorial gains.

Russian troops are slowly ramming through the Ukrainian defences in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, the main focus of the Russian offensive. They are also trying to carve out a buffer zone along the border with the northeastern Ukrainian regions of Sumy and Kharkiv.

Russia currently holds about 20% of Ukraine. Ukraine's depleted army has recently been losing more territory, but there is no sign of a looming collapse on the front line, analysts say.

Zelenskyy said he spoke to Trump after the Republican leader's Oval Office announcement Monday on weapons sales, expressing gratitude for the decision to send more Patriot air defence missiles that are vital to defend Ukrainian cities.

“We discussed... the necessary measures and decisions to provide greater protection for people from Russian attacks and strengthen our positions,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram. “We agreed to talk more often and coordinate our steps in the future.” Trump and Zelenskyy have had a notoriously fraught relationship, and Washington's consent to providing more weaponry has eased Kyiv's worries.

Even so, some Ukrainians felt the US decision won't alter the course of the war. “If we take the situation as a whole, it hardly looks like this will fundamentally change anything,” Kyiv resident Oles Oliinyk, 33, told The Associated Press.

Tokar, the Kyiv resident, was also skeptical. “I have very little faith in (Trump). He says one thing today, and tomorrow he may say something else.” Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp expressed misgivings about the 50-day delay on sanctions.

“I do believe that the 50 days that Mr Trump has announced is rather long. It's up to September 2. I think that's rather long,” he said in Brussels on Tuesday.

Much remains to be worked out about how and when the weapons, especially the Patriot systems, will be provided, Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said.

But, in an indication that Europe is relieved that the US hasn't walked away from the conflict, he added: “The most important thing is that we now have an American readiness to deliver these most needed weapons.” Some European countries, such as Hungary and Slovakia, still rely heavily on Russia for energy supplies and could be hit hard by Trump's threatened secondary sanctions on countries that buy its oil and gas — an effort to isolate Moscow in the global economy.

Lithuania's Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said Trump's 50-day delay was a “signal for Europe to prepare ourselves, because we still have some member states that are exposed to imports of oil and oil products from Russia”.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said it remains to be seen whether Trump's announcement will be a turnaround but “what is decisive is that the tone has changed.” The president's threat to impose sanctions after 50 days is “significant progress,” Pistorius told ARD television.
