Government owes Rs 1,015 crore to insurers delaying crop insurance payments to farmers
The state government owes Rs 1,015 crore in premium payments to insurance companies, causing delays in crop insurance claim disbursements to farmers. The Agriculture Minister announced the government would pay its installment within eight days and assured eligible farmers would receive compensation for crop losses within 15 days. Under the crop insurance scheme running since 2016, insurance companies received Rs 43,201.33 crore in premiums from 2016-17 to 2023-24, while settling claims worth Rs 32,629 crore, representing 76% of total premiums collected. The minister noted insurance companies profited more than farmers from the scheme.
