Central government assures Presidential assent for six-year-old bill identifying foreigners and genuine residents
The central government assured the state government that steps will be taken to obtain Presidential assent for a six-year-old bill aimed at identifying foreigners and genuine residents. The Chief Minister met with the Union Home Minister to discuss various issues including the Household Registers Bill 2019, establishment of a peace city, airport transfer, and welfare schemes. The bill was passed by the state assembly in 2019 but required Presidential approval due to provisions related to foreigner identification. The former chief minister had stated the legislation would help address illegal influx from neighboring countries and improve welfare scheme delivery. The state shares borders with two neighboring countries and currently shelters approximately 40,000 refugees.
