15,000 jute mill workers receive promotions to permanent status under tripartite agreement
Around 15,000 workers across 40 jute mills in West Bengal received promotions to 'special badli' and 'permanent worker' categories under a tripartite agreement signed in January 2024. The promotions followed a meeting chaired by the Labour Minister with representatives from the Indian Jute Mills Association and trade unions. Workers with 15-20 years of service and 70% attendance between 2021-2025 qualified for the one-time scheme. The mills association raised concerns about non-compliance by some units, citing a High Court order regarding factory license cancellations for defaulting mills.
