Medieval Moroccan judge travels 73,000 miles across 50 countries documenting diverse cultures and societies
A 14th-century Moroccan judge and ambassador traveled approximately 73,000 miles over 30 years, visiting regions encompassing more than 50 countries across the medieval Islamic world and beyond. Born in 1304, he began his journeys at age 22 for pilgrimage to Mecca in 1325. He served as a judge in Delhi for seven years under a sultan, was appointed as an ambassador to China, and married local women in various locations. His travels took him through North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, India, Southeast Asia, and China. Upon returning to Morocco in 1355, he dictated his experiences to a scholar, creating a comprehensive travelogue that documented 14th-century social, political, and religious life across diverse cultures, including observations on women's status, food customs, religious practices, and encounters with over 60 rulers and 2,000 prominent figures.
