Political Landscape Shifts as NPP Secures Majority Councils Despite Vote Share Decline, Opposition Remains Competitive
In Sri Lanka's local elections, the National People's Power (NPP) emerged as the largest party, winning 265 out of 339 municipal councils. Despite securing 43% of votes compared to their previous 68%, the party's ability to form administrations is uncertain due to opposition group strength. The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya won 14 councils, with over 70% voter turnout. In Colombo, the NPP won 48 of 117 seats, while in the northeast, a Tamil party performed strongly, winning 43 of 58 contested councils.
