EU Enforces Digital Markets Act: Apple Must Open iOS for Compatibility; Google Criticized for Non-Compliance
The European Union has mandated that Apple must open its iPhone and iPad operating systems to enhance compatibility with competing technologies, as part of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This marks the first enforcement of the DMA, which was implemented last year. The EU Commission has specified steps for Apple to improve access for smartwatches and other devices to its iOS, and to enhance the transparency for software developers requesting access to iPhone features. Additionally, the Commission criticized Google for not fully complying with the DMA, citing preferential treatment of its services in search results and restrictions on app developers informing users about cheaper alternatives outside the Google Play Store.
