India Boosts Nuclear Capacity: 700 MW Plant Connects to Grid, Aiming for 100 GW by 2047
India's 700 MW nuclear power plant at Rawatbhata, Rajasthan, was connected to the northern grid, increasing the country's nuclear energy capacity to 8,880 MW. The Rajasthan Atomic Power Project's Unit 7 met all regulatory requirements before connection. This unit is part of a series of 16 indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) planned in India, with its twin unit expected to be operational by 2025-26. These reactors feature advanced safety measures and contribute significantly to India's goal of achieving 100 GW nuclear power capacity by 2047, reducing carbon emissions substantially. NPCIL currently operates 25 reactors.
