Mizoram Plans to Amend Liquor Law, Allowing Wine and Beer Sales; Hard Liquor Ban to Stay
The Mizoram government is considering amending the liquor prohibition law, in effect since May 2019, to permit the sale of wine and beer. The Chief Minister announced plans to introduce a bill during the current budget session to regulate these sales, while maintaining the ban on hard liquor. The existing prohibition law, enacted by the previous government, replaced a 2014 law that allowed wine sales. In 2022, the government permitted the production and sale of wine from local grapes after protests by grape growers. The prohibition is often linked to increased drug abuse among the youth in the predominantly Christian state.
