The meeting took place during the Indian Ocean Conference in Oman, aiming to address tensions following the ouster of Bangladesh's former leader. Relations between the two countries have been strained due to violence against minority Hindus in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is set to chair the upcoming BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok in April.
