:Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) following the earthquake in Japan and concerns of possible radiation leakage from affected nuclear plants, increased the surveillance of food imports from Japan to ensure that they are safe for consumption. FSSAI vide an advisory dated 15.03.2011 decided that as a precautionary measure, samples of food articles, particularly fresh produce, exported from Japan after 11.03.2011, such as seafood, fruits, vegetables and meat shall be tested for radioactive contamination before issuing NOC to the Customs.
This information was given by Shri Jyotiradiya M. Scindia, Minister of State for Commerce & Industry in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
