Proposed Law Classifies Faulty Road Construction as Non-Bailable to Hold Contractors Accountable Amid High Accident Rates in India.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister emphasized that faulty road construction should be classified as a non-bailable offense, holding contractors and engineers accountable for accidents. India leads globally in road accidents, with 2023 data showing 500,000 incidents and 172,000 deaths, predominantly affecting individuals aged 18-45. The absence of helmets and seat belts contributed to 55,000 and 30,000 deaths, respectively. The ministry is investing Rs 40,000 crore to address highway black spots and aims to halve road fatalities by 2030. Collaboration with industry and stakeholders is encouraged to establish driver training and fitness centers to mitigate driver shortages.
