Authority Upholds 2023 Attachment of Atiq Ahmad's Benami Properties; Orders Probe into Additional Land Sales.
The Adjudicating Authority for the anti-benami law has upheld the Income Tax department's 2023 attachment of six land parcels linked to a probe against deceased gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad. These properties, valued at over Rs 4.63 crore in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, were frozen by the Benami Prohibition Unit. Suraj Pal was named as the 'benamidar,' while Mohammad Ashraf Siddiqui, a relative of Atiq Ahmad's brother, was identified as the beneficial owner. The Authority found these assets to be benami properties, dismissing the defendants' claims of insufficient evidence, and suggested potential money laundering activities. Further investigation into other properties sold by Pal was ordered.
