Government Considers Mandatory Hallmarking for Silver Artifacts to Enhance Consumer Protection and Authenticity Standards.
The government is contemplating mandatory hallmarking for silver and silver artifacts due to consumer demand. The Food and Consumer Affairs Minister suggested that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) consider this move during the BIS Foundation Day event. Currently, hallmarking is required only for gold jewelry and artifacts, which ensures consumer protection and product authenticity through a unique six-digit alphanumeric code. Extending this hallmarking system to silver would significantly broaden India's quality control measures for precious metals.
