NPCI Extends 30% UPI Transaction Cap Deadline for Third-Party Apps to December 2026; Lifts WhatsApp Pay User Cap.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has extended the deadline for enforcing a 30% transaction volume cap on third-party Unified Payments Interface (UPI) apps, such as PhonePe and Google Pay, to December 31, 2026. This extension marks the third time the deadline has been pushed back since the cap was proposed in November 2020. Currently, these major apps hold an 80% market share in UPI transactions. Additionally, NPCI has removed the user cap for WhatsApp Pay, allowing it to offer UPI services to its entire user base in India. NPCI, backed by the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks' Association, oversees retail payments in India.
