RBI Allows Foreign Visitors and NRIs to Use UPI at Select Indian Airports; Service Expands for G-20 Travelers.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has permitted foreign nationals and NRIs visiting India to use the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for payments. This facility is available at select international airports in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and New Delhi for travelers from G-20 countries. Additionally, NRIs with international mobile numbers linked to their NRE/NRO accounts can access UPI. The service is available to visitors from 10 countries, including the USA, UK, and UAE. UPI transactions have seen significant growth, with a notable increase in both volume and value from 2018 to 2023. NPCI International Payments Limited is working on expanding UPI internationally.
