Wholesale Price Indices for Primary Articles and Fuel & Power in India (Base: 2004-05 = 100) Review for the week ended 24th December, 2011 (03 Pausha, 1933 Saka)

The WPI for the week ended 24^th December, 2011 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and ‘Fuel & Power’ is given below:

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.1 percent to 197.6 (Provisional) from 197.5 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 0.10 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 24/12/2011 (over 25/12/2010) as compared to 2.70 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 17/12/2011).

The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

The index for 'Food Articles' group declined by 0.2 percent to 190.0 (Provisional) from 190.3 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of jowar, fruits & vegetables, gram and moong (1% each). However, the prices of poultry chicken (3%), egg, ragi and maize (2% each) moved up.

The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group rose by 0.6 percent to 178.7 (Provisional) from 177.6 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of soyabean (6%), raw jute (4%), gaur seed and gingelly seed (3% each), cotton seed and raw cotton (2% each) and coir fibre, groundnut seed and mesta (1% each). However, the prices of flowers (7%) and castor seed, fodder and copra (2% each) declined.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index for this major group remained unchanged at its previous week's level of 172.7 (Provisional).

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 14.60 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 24/12/2011 (over 25/12/2010) as compared to 14.37 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 17/12/2011).

Build up inflation over the week, financial year end and over the year is given in Annexure-I for some important items. Trend of rate of inflation during last six weeks is also given for some important items in Annexure II.

Wholesale price inflation: primary articles slightly up and food down, fuel & power stable with elevated annual inflation. Primary Articles index rose 0.1 percent to 197.6 with an annual point to point inflation of 0.10 percent; Food Articles declined 0.2 percent while Non Food Articles increased 0.6 percent due to higher prices in oilseeds, fibres and raw jute. Fuel & Power index was unchanged at 172.7 with an annual inflation rate of 14.60 percent. Annexures provide build up, year on year, 52 week averages and six week trends for key sub groups and commodities.
