USFDA Report Urges Training for Aquaculture Safety; India Responds with Programs in Key States.
USFDA officials visited India from April 26 to May 7, 2010, to assess measures for controlling chemotherapeutic residues in aquaculture products. Their report, submitted on February 28, 2011, highlighted a reliance on laboratory testing without a comprehensive food safety training and inspection program. They recommended training on Good Aquaculture Practices, record-keeping of substances used, and inspections of facilities and feed manufacturers. In response, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) conducted training programs in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Orissa in April 2011 for aquaculture stakeholders. This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry in the Lok Sabha.
