India Acknowledges Trade Deficit with China; Focuses on Boosting Domestic Manufacturing Competitiveness through Infrastructure and Skill Development.
The Indian government has not conducted a study on the dependency of its manufacturing sector on Chinese imports but is aware of the growing trade deficit with China. Efforts are underway to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic industry through infrastructure development, investment promotion, and skill development. Trade data from 2009 to 2012 shows a consistent trade deficit with China, with imports outpacing exports. As a WTO member, India can impose duties on imports that harm its domestic industry. This information was provided by a government official in response to a query in the Lok Sabha.
