Wholesale Price Indices for Primary Articles and Fuel & Power in India (Base: 2004-05 = 100) Review for the week ended 5th November, 2011 (14 Kartika, 1933 Saka)
The WPI for the week ended 5th November, 2011 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and ‘Fuel & Power’ is given below:
PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)
The index for this major group declined by 0.8 percent to 203.0 (Provisional) from 204.7 (Provisional) for the previous week.
The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 10.39 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 05/11/2011 (over 06/11/2010) as compared to 11.43 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 29/10/2011).
The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-
The index for ‘Food Articles’ group declined by 0.9 percent to 199.8 (Provisional) from 201.7 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of fish-inland (5%), masur (4%), poultry chicken (3%), fruits & vegetables (2%) and ragi, urad, maize, gram, wheat and condiments & spices (1% each). However, the prices of bajra (3%), jowar (2%) and tea (1%) moved up.
The index for ‘Non-Food Articles’ group declined by 0.9 percent to 175.9 (Provisional) from 177.5 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of logs & timber (17%), mesta (10%), flowers (6%), raw rubber and rape & mustard seed (3% each) and raw jute (2%). However, the prices of castor seed (5%), sunflower (2%) and soyabean, linseed and gaur seed (1% each) moved up.
FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)
The index for this major group rose by 1.0 percent to 171.5 (Provisional) from 169.8 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of aviation turbine fuel (6%), furnace oil (5%), naphtha (4%) and light diesel oil and petrol (3% each).
The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 15.49 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 05/11/2011 (over 06/11/2010) as compared to 14.50 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 29/10/2011).
Build up inflation over the week, financial year end and over the year is given in Annexure-I for some important items. Trend of rate of inflation during last six weeks is also given for some important items in Annexure II.

Wholesale price inflation: primary articles eased weekly while fuel and power rose, altering annual inflation trends. Wholesale Price Index movements for the week ended 5 November 2011 show Primary Articles declining week on week with lower Food and Non Food Article prices and a reduced point to point annual inflation rate, while Fuel & Power rose due to higher prices for aviation turbine fuel, furnace oil, naphtha, light diesel oil and petrol, producing an increased point to point annual inflation rate.
