Import of Sensitive items During April-July 2011
Total import of sensitive items for the period April-July 2011 has been Rs.31692 crores as compared to Rs.23039 crores during the corresponding period of last year thereby showing an increase of 37.6%. The gross import of all commodities during same period of current year was Rs.674324 crores as compared to Rs.495149 crores during the same period of last year. Thus import of sensitive items constitutes 4.7% of the gross imports during last year as well as current year.
Imports of milk & milk products, tea & coffee and food grains have declined at broad group level during the period. Imports of all other items viz. edible oil, automobiles, fruits & vegetables (including nuts), pulses, rubber, cotton & silk, products of SSI, spices, marble & granite and alcoholic beverages have increased during the period under reference.
In the edible oil segment, the import has increased from Rs.8763.7 crores last year to Rs.14273.6 crores for the corresponding period of this year. The imports of both crude oil as well as refined oil have gone up by 62.4% and 67.3% respectively. The increase in edible oil import is mainly due to substantial increase in import of crude palm oil and its fractions.
Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, China P RP, Malaysia, Argentina, Germany, Korea RP, Ukraine, United States of America, Canada, Japan, Thailand, Benin, Ghana, United Kingdom etc. have gone up while those from Myanmar, Australia etc. have gone down.

Imports of sensitive items rose sharply, led by edible oil growth driven by crude palm oil imports. Import of sensitive items increased 37.6% in April-July 2011 to Rs.31691.78 crore, remaining 4.7% of gross imports. Categoryal declines occurred in milk & milk products, tea & coffee and food grains, while edible oil, automobiles, fruits & vegetables, pulses, rubber, cotton & silk, SSI products and spices rose. The edible oil surge was driven mainly by higher crude palm oil and its fractions, with strong increases in both crude and refined imports.
