India's SEZs and IT Units Operate During COVID-19 Lockdown to Supply Essentials and Enable Remote Work.
More than 280 units in India's Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are operational during the COVID-19 lockdown to ensure the supply of essential items like pharmaceuticals and hospital devices. SEZs have contributed significantly to India's exports, surpassing USD 110 billion in the 2019-20 financial year. Additionally, over 1900 IT/ITES units have been enabled for remote work. Development Commissioners are instructed to avoid punitive actions for compliance delays and facilitate electronic extensions of approvals. Temporary extensions are granted until June 30, 2020, to prevent operational disruptions, while ensuring workplace safety and social distancing.
