India Boosts Defense Production: New Initiatives Encourage Local Design, Manufacturing, and Innovation in Collaboration with Private Sector.
The government has implemented several initiatives to boost domestic production and promote indigenous design and manufacturing of defense equipment in collaboration with the Indian private sector. Key measures include revising the Defence Procurement Procedure to prioritize Indian-designed and manufactured equipment, allowing increased foreign direct investment, and launching the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) to foster innovation. The Make Procedure has been simplified with financial support for development costs, and a Strategic Partnership Model has been established to facilitate technology transfers. From 2014 to 2019, 218 proposals worth approximately Rs. 409,244 crore were approved, with 281 companies receiving manufacturing licenses.
