The backlog in the Trade Marks Registry has arisen because of approximately 100% increase in the applications filed since 2001-02 and also due to lack of adequate manpower as out of 122 sanctioned posts of officers of the rank of examiners and above, 71 posts are lying vacant. Recruitment agencies have been requested to hasten the recruitment process in order to fill up the vacant posts in the Trade Marks Registry. Other steps such as introduction of free search facilities and digitization of records have also been taken to streamline the registration procedure.
This information was given by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.

Trademark opposition backlog driven by surge in filings and staffing shortages; recruitment and digitization measures initiated. A significant trademark opposition backlog and numerous missing physical trademark files are reported across Trade Marks Registry branches; causes cited are a marked increase in filings since 2001-02 and substantial vacancies among examiner-and-above posts. Administrative measures to address delays include expedited recruitment to fill vacancies, provision of free search facilities, and digitization of records to streamline registration and case management.
