Indian Railways to Electrify 13,675 km by 2022, Boosting Efficiency and Cutting Fuel Costs by Rs. 13,510 Crore Annually.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the electrification of the remaining unelectrified broad gauge routes of Indian Railways, covering 13,675 route kilometers at a cost of Rs. 12,134.50 crore, to be completed by 2021-22. This initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency, line capacity, and train speed, while improving safety and energy security. The electrification will reduce fossil fuel consumption by 2.83 billion liters annually, saving Rs. 13,510 crore in fuel costs per year. It will also generate 20.4 crore man-days of employment during construction and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with India's environmental commitments.
