India Expands Task Force Scope to Reform Public Distribution System, Focus on Direct Subsidy Transfers Using Aadhaar.
The Ministry of Finance in India has extended the terms of reference for a Task Force led by the Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India. Initially focused on direct subsidy transfers for kerosene, LPG, and fertilizers, the Task Force's scope now includes reforming the Public Distribution System (PDS). This involves recommending changes to systems, IT frameworks, and supply chain management, and devising a strategy for direct subsidy transfers using Aadhaar numbers. The Task Force will report its findings by August 31, 2011, with support from the Ministry of Food and Public Distribution and input from state governments.
