India Approves Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill 2018 to Recover Assets from Offenders Abroad, Strengthening Financial Recovery.
The Union Cabinet, led by the Prime Minister, approved the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018, aiming to deter economic offenders from evading Indian law by staying outside the country's jurisdiction. The Bill targets cases involving offences worth Rs. 100 crore or more, allowing for the attachment and confiscation of offenders' properties. A Special Court will declare individuals as fugitive economic offenders, and an Administrator will manage confiscated assets. The Bill ensures constitutional safeguards and seeks to improve financial recovery for banks by compelling offenders to return to India for trial, thus strengthening the rule of law and financial health of institutions.
