Government Imposes 30% Import Duty on Chickpeas and Lentils to Protect Farmers Amid High Rabi Season Production.
The government has imposed a 30% import duty on chickpeas and lentils to protect domestic farmers from the impact of cheap imports, which could harm their interests given the expected high production during the upcoming Rabi season. Currently, tur attracts a 10% import duty, while yellow peas have a 50% duty. Other pulses have no import duty. Despite a record domestic production of pulses, imports continue due to low international prices, suppressing local prices and affecting farmers. The decision is formalized through notification number 93/2017-Customs dated December 21, 2017.
