Govt Committees Propose Reforms to Boost Digital Payments; Interim Report Submitted to PM in Jan 2017.
A committee led by a former finance secretary was established by the Department of Economic Affairs in August 2016 to enhance the digital payment system in the country. It recommended structural reforms, including amendments to the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007. Two committees were also formed by Niti Aayog: one to identify digital payment options and another, led by a state chief minister, to facilitate the population's transition to digital payments. The latter submitted an interim report to the Prime Minister in January 2017. This information was disclosed by a minister in a written statement to the Lok Sabha.
