India to Revise Tax Treaties Allowing CBI and ED Access to Overseas Tax Data for Criminal Prosecutions.
The government plans to revise tax treaties with partner countries to allow the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to use tax data for prosecuting individuals hiding black money abroad. Forty treaties for avoiding double taxation have been updated to permit the use of exchanged information for non-tax criminal proceedings, pending agreement from partner countries. India has also signed the Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters to facilitate such exchanges. However, not all partner countries have agreed, and no timeline is available for these revisions, as stated by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance.
