260 products have been registered as Geographical Indications (GIs) since 2003.

Geographical Indications are covered as an element of Intellectual Property Rights under the TRIPS Agreement. The Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property does not mention Geographical Indications; however, Appellations of Origin, which are a particular kind of Geographical Indications, are covered under the Paris Convention.

There is no Geographical Indication registered in the name of Bhut Jolokia green chillies. A list of products from North Eastern States registered as Geographical Indications is enclosed at Annexure -A.

This information was given by the Commerce and Industry Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today

Geographical indications recognised under TRIPS; government publishes registered product list and northeastern GI entries, Bhut Jolokia not registered. The release records that numerous products have been registered as Geographical Indications since the regime began and confirms Geographical Indications are recognised under the international intellectual property framework of TRIPS; the Paris Convention does not explicitly reference Geographical Indications but covers Appellations of Origin. It states there is no Geographical Indication for Bhut Jolokia green chillies and publishes an annexure listing northeastern products with their GI classification by type of goods and state of origin.
