India Bans Plastic Waste Imports Under Hazardous Wastes Rules 2016; Strengthens Standards for Domestic and Imported Goods.
The Indian government has revised its regulations on hazardous materials, banning the import of plastic waste from all countries as per the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016. The Foreign Trade Policy (2015-2020) ensures that domestic standards for goods apply to imports, unless exempted. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006, are also applicable to imports. A Standards Committee on Plastics has been established to prevent the entry of substandard plastics, and domestic industries can use trade defense measures like anti-dumping duties for protection.
