India Ends Legal Tender Status of Rs. 500 & Rs. 1000 Notes to Fight Fake Currency & Black Money.
The Indian government withdrew the legal tender status of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 banknotes to combat fake currency and black money. These notes could no longer be used for transactions but could be exchanged at banks and post offices until December 30, 2016. Individuals could exchange up to Rs. 2000 in cash per transaction, with larger amounts credited to bank accounts. Special provisions allowed for cash withdrawals and payments for essential services. The scheme included pre-2005 notes, and banks were instructed to manage queues and ensure sufficient cash availability. The public was advised to use electronic payment methods and open bank accounts if needed.
