India and Bangladesh Strengthen Border Community Ties with Border Haats Agreement to Boost Local Trade.
The Union Cabinet of India approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh to establish and operate Border Haats along their shared border. This agreement, initially signed in 2010 and amended in 2012, aims to enhance the economic well-being of remote border communities through local trade in local currencies or barter. Existing Border Haats are operational in Meghalaya and Tripura, with plans to establish more. These markets, though minor in bilateral trade terms, support marginalized communities. The initiative followed discussions during the Bangladesh Prime Minister's 2010 visit to India, agreeing to pilot these markets at selected locations.
