Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Foreign Institutional Investment (FII)/ Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) are two different routes of foreign investment and FII/ FPI is not a component of FDI. FII/FPI investment in 2014-15 was US$ 40,923 million.

This information was given by the Minister of State(Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.

FDI distinguished from FII/FPI; separate reporting affirmed and portfolio flows excluded from FDI totals. Distinction between FDI and FII/FPI is affirmed: FII/FPI is a separate route and not a component of FDI. Annual FDI inflows for 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 are reported and aggregated to a cumulative total for 2012-15. The 2014-15 FII/FPI amount is identified separately, and the information is provided via a ministerial written reply and press release.
