This Would Help in Addressing the Backlog of Taxpayers’ Appeals and Offer better Services to the Taxpayers in the Field Offices

In a major step towards implementation of restructuring of the Income Tax Department, the Government has approved the promotion of 153 officers to the rank of Commissioners of Income Tax. The officers belong to 1992, 1993 & 1994 batches. With these promotions, the Department will be able to address the shortage of officers at various stations to a significant extent. These officers will be deployed in posts primarily dealing with matters of dispute resolution. It is expected that with these postings, the Department will be able to address the backlog of taxpayers’ appeals and offer better services to the taxpayers in the field offices.

A cadre restructuring of the Income Tax Department was approved by the Government in May, 2013. The restructuring exercise has gathered momentum this year with the Department moving towards filling-up posts at various levels.

Promotion of Tax Commissioners to bolster dispute resolution capacity and reduce the backlog of taxpayers' appeals. Approval of promotions to Commissioner of Income Tax for 153 IRS officers of the 1992-1994 batches is intended to fill leadership vacancies and staff posts dealing with dispute resolution. As part of the May 2013 cadre restructuring, these deployments aim to reduce the backlog of taxpayers' appeals and enhance taxpayer services in field offices by increasing capacity for appeal disposal and dispute management.
