Financial Inclusion Mission to Launch August 15, 2014, Targeting Banking Access for All Households Across the Country.
The Financial Inclusion Mission is set to launch on August 15, 2014, aiming to provide banking facilities to all households in the country. As of 2011, 58.7% of households had access to banking services. Under a previous campaign, banks were instructed to establish facilities in areas with populations over 2000 by March 2012, covering 74,351 villages. The Reserve Bank of India has allowed domestic banks to expand branches in rural and semi-urban areas, requiring 25% of new branches to be in unbanked rural areas. This initiative was announced in the 2014-15 Union Budget.
