The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2004-05 for the month of January 2014 have been released by the Central Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. IIP is compiled using data received from 16 source agencies viz. Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP); Indian Bureau of Mines; Central Electricity Authority; Joint Plant Committee; Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas; Office of Textile Commissioner; Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals; Directorate of Sugar; Department of Fertilizers; Directorate of Vanaspati, Vegetable Oils & Fats; Tea Board; Office of Jute Commissioner; Office of Coal Controller; Railway Board; Office of Salt Commissioner and Coffee Board.

2. The General Index for the month of January 2014 stands at 182.2, which is 0.1% higher as compared to the level in the month of January 2013. The cumulative growth for the period April-January 2013-14 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 0.0%.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of January 2014 stand at 136.5, 192.3 and 171.1 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of  0.7%, (-) 0.7% and 6.5% as compared to January 2013 (Statement I). The cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-January 2013-14 over the corresponding period of 2012-13 has been (-) 1.5%, (-) 0.4% and 5.7% respectively.

In terms of industries, eleven (11) out of the twenty two (22) industry groups (as per 2-digit NIC-2004) in the manufacturing sector have shown positive growth during the month of January 2014 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (Statement II). The industry group ‘Medical, precision & optical instruments, watches and clocks’ has shown the highest positive growth of 17.6%, followed by 15.2% in ‘Electrical machinery & apparatus n.e.c.’ and 14.4% in ‘Wearing apparel; dressing and dyeing of fur’. On the other hand, the industry group ‘Radio, TV and communication equipment & apparatus’ has shown a negative growth of (-) 28.2% followed by (-) 14.0% in ‘Motor vehicles, trailers & semi-trailers’ and (-) 9.5% in ‘Fabricated metal products, except machinery & equipment’.

As per Use-based classification, the growth rates in January 2014 over January 2013 are 0.9% in Basic goods, (-) 4.2% in Capital goods and 3.4% in Intermediate goods (Statement III).  The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 8.3% and 4.4% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being (-) 0.6%.

6. Some of the important items showing high positive growth during the current month over the same month in previous year include ‘Coir Mats and Mattings’ (98.1%), ‘Cable, Rubber Insulated’ (56.6%), ‘Air Conditioners (Room)’ (32.5%), ‘Ship Building & Repairs’ (30.2%), ‘Steel Structures’ (26.5%), ‘Cashew Kernels’ (25.0%), ‘Scooter and Mopeds’ (23.8%), ‘Vitamins’ (22.7%), ‘Stainless/ alloy steel’ (21.3%) and ‘Antibiotics & its preparations’ (21.2%).

7. Some of the other important items showing high negative growth are: ‘Boilers’ [(-) 50.4%], ‘H R Sheets’ [(-) 48.5%], ‘Earth Moving Machinery’ [(-) 45.2%], ‘Aluminium Conductor’ [(-) 43.2%], ‘Grinding Wheels’ [(-) 38.9%], ‘Carbon Steel’ [(-) 37.5%], ‘Telephone Instruments (incl. Mobile Phones & Accessories)’  [(-) 30.7%], ‘Generator/ Alternator’ [(-) 26.4%], ‘PVC Pipes and Tubes’  [(-) 25.7%], Polyester Chips’ [(-) 24.4%], ‘Commercial Vehicles’ [(-) 22.6%] and ‘Aluminium wires & extrusions’ [(-) 21.5%].

8. For the items of ‘Petroleum refinery products’ and ‘Steel (alloy + non-alloy)’ covered as a part of release of the ‘Index of Eight Core Industries’, percentages in growth rates of production as per Index of Core Industries and IIP may differ significantly in view of differences in the coverage and item specifications as per the two sources.

9. Along with the Quick Estimates of IIP for the month of January 2014, the indices for December 2013 have undergone the first revision and those for October 2013 have undergone the final revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. It may be noted that these revised indices (first revision) in respect of December 2013 shall undergo final (second) revision along with the release of IIP for the month of March 2014.
