Whether Stipend paid to Post Graduate(MD) trainee is taxable

Dr Aveek Mukherjee

Hi all!

I have just started training as an MD in IPGME&R and SSKM Hospital,Kolkata.

I will be paid a stipend of Rs 24741 in the 1st yr, abt Rs 25500 in the 2nd and abt Rs 28500 in the 3rd.

I wanted to know whether I'll have to pay income tax for the stipendiary income.

Postgraduate Trainee Seeks Clarity on Taxability of Stipends; References Clause 10(16) and Court Judgment for Guidance. A postgraduate trainee inquired about the taxability of their stipend. One respondent clarified that the stipend is akin to a scholarship and not taxable, referencing an ITAT decision. Another respondent shared their experience, stating their DNB training stipend was non-taxable, but faced conflicting advice regarding tax on a fellowship stipend. They mentioned differing opinions from accountants and references to clause 10(16) of the Income Tax Act and a Karnataka High Court judgment, seeking clarity on the tax status of their current fellowship stipend.
