Education tax paid for self edu. - can it be taken in itr?

Rishu Gupta

Hi All,

I am 28 yrs IT Engineer and have paid ₹ 6,00,000.00 for my higher education + ₹ 84,000.00 as TAX.

Q: Can I claim this ₹ 84,000.00 in ITR(AY 2016-2017)? If Yes, then please let me know under what section? If No, then I have heard this can be done, if I show it as a consultation fee?

Please guide.

Service Tax on Education Expenses Not Claimable in 2016-2017 Income Tax Return; Consultation Fee Option Dismissed An individual inquired whether the 84,000 paid as tax on their 6,00,000 higher education expenses could be claimed in their Income Tax Return for the Assessment Year 2016-2017. Responses indicated that if the tax is service tax at 14%, it cannot be claimed in the income tax return. The possibility of categorizing it as a consultation fee was dismissed, as the nature of the tax must be specified, and if it is listed on the bill, it cannot be treated as a consultation fee.
