New Guidelines for Metal Scrap Import: Shredded Scrap Eases, Unshredded Needs EDI Ports & DGFT Approval.
The Central Board of Excise & Customs has withdrawn previous circulars related to the clearance of metal scrap imports and introduced a new procedure. Shredded metal scrap can be imported through all ports without a pre-shipment certificate. Unshredded, compressed, or loose scrap must follow guidelines from the Director General of Foreign Trade and be cleared only through EDI ports with an operational Risk Management Module. Designated sea ports are expected to install Radiation Portal Monitors and Container Scanners by March 31, 2017. Importers may be allowed to move sealed containers to their premises under specific conditions.
