Mumbai Customs Reduces IGM Copies, Simplifies Transhipment Rules to Cut Costs and Speed Up Clearance Times.
The circular from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs in Mumbai addresses the lack of uniformity in Customs procedures at various ports, which increases transaction costs and clearance times. To streamline these processes, the Board has decided to reduce the number of hard copies of Import General Manifests (IGM) required from seven to two and allow a continuity bond for port clearance to reduce documentation. For transhipped cargo, only one hard copy of the Sub Manifest Transhipment Permit (SMTP) is necessary. Additionally, no separate permission is needed for changing the mode of transport for transhipment containers, provided the carrier notifies the jurisdictional Customs Commissioner.
