The return was processed under Section 143(1) of the Income Tax Act, 1961 ("the Act') and a demand of Rs.175,52,26,440/- raised. Subsequently the case was selected for scrutiny assessment under CASS on the identified issue of "expenses incurred for earning exempt income". A higher superior authority should interfere with the decision of the AO/TRO only in exceptional circumstances e.g. where the assessment order appears to be unreasonably high pitched or where genuine hardship is likely to be caused to the assessee.
