India Amends Courier Imports & Exports Regulations: New Agent Qualifications, Higher Monetary Thresholds, & Client Verification Rules
The Government of India has issued Notification No. 75/2010-Customs (N.T.) to amend the Courier Imports and Exports (Clearance) Regulations, 1998. The amendments include changes to regulations concerning the qualifications required for agents handling courier clearances, increasing monetary thresholds for certain declarations, and introducing new requirements for verifying client information. Specifically, agents must now pass examinations outlined in the Customs House Agents Licensing Regulations, 2004. The amendments also allow a six-month transition period for compliance and stipulate that import consignments valued at ten thousand rupees or less can have authorization obtained at delivery.
