CBDT Shortens ITR Verification Period to 30 Days Post-E-Filing; Affects Returns from August 1, 2022 Onwards.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has reduced the time limit for verifying Income Tax Returns (ITR) from 120 days to 30 days following electronic transmission. This change applies to returns transmitted on or after the notification's effective date, August 1, 2022. If verification occurs within 30 days, the electronic transmission date is considered the filing date. If verification is delayed, the actual verification date is deemed the filing date, potentially incurring late filing consequences. Verified ITR-Vs must be sent via speed post to the Centralised Processing Centre in Bengaluru. The notification applies to returns filed on the e-filing portal.
