Money-laundering prosecution complaints allege fund diversion through shell entities, credit-facility evergreening, layered transactions and fictitious project expenditure.
Money-laundering prosecution complaints allege that funds from toll-road projects and credit facilities were diverted through group companies, contractors, shell entities and conduit accounts. In the toll-road matter, allegedly sham or back-dated subcontracting arrangements and subsequent documentation were used to portray transfers as genuine project expenditure. In the credit-facilities matter, fresh facilities were allegedly used to repay, rotate and evergreen earlier liabilities rather than for sanctioned end-use, with funds layered and presented as legitimate business expenditure or receipts. Attached assets are sought to be confiscated as alleged proceeds of crime.

Direct Benefit Transfer pension disbursement replaces cooperative-bank doorstep delivery, while preserving home payments for beneficiaries unable to use bank accounts.
Direct Benefit Transfer of social security and welfare pensions to Aadhaar-linked bank accounts is intended to replace cooperative-bank doorstep delivery, except for bedridden and similarly situated beneficiaries. The change addresses delays in remitting undistributed pensions, deficient record updates and reconciliation, duplicate payments, delivery incentives, and compliance with Direct Benefit Transfer norms. Criticism focuses on beneficiary access to linked commercial-bank accounts, possible minimum-balance deductions, exclusion of cooperative banks, and the effect on doorstep-delivery workers.

Savings account selection requires comparison of effective interest, fees, digital service, access, and individual banking needs.
Savings-account selection should compare effective interest returns under slab-based rates, recurring operating charges and the customer's actual banking needs. Net value depends not only on advertised rates but also on relevant minimum-balance, card, ATM, alert and transfer fees. Digital reliability, customer support, branch availability and ATM access should be assessed according to the customer's average balance, cash use, transfer frequency, travel patterns and need for in-person assistance. The suitable account is one that matches real banking behaviour.

Urban cooperative bank regulation promotes licensing, governance, compliance support and cybersecurity measures to strengthen stability and depositor confidence.
Urban cooperative banks are encouraged to recognise regulatory support through liberalised branch opening, doorstep banking, demand drafts, life certificates, dedicated regulatory coordination, enhanced gold-loan limits, one-time settlements and progress towards on-tap licensing. Sound governance is material to sectoral stability, while small-borrower lending is presented as a comparatively safe lending segment. Illegal immigration enforcement prioritises dismantling entry, documentation and employment networks while requiring citizens to report information through police channels.
Illegal immigration enforcement involves continuous identification and verification operations, coordination with relevant officials, and confidential investigation of networks facilitating entry, identity documentation, accommodation and employment. Enquiries extend to intermediaries, contractors, Aadhaar procurement and verification practices, rather than focusing only on apprehended individuals. Citizen vigilantism, moral policing and social-media targeting of suspected migrants are discouraged because they may compromise investigations; information should instead be given through proper police channels.

Foreign capital inflows supported the rupee despite geopolitical uncertainty, oil-price pressures, and volatile global market sentiment.
Foreign capital inflows supported a marginal strengthening of the rupee against the US dollar despite global risk aversion arising from uncertainty surrounding negotiations affecting the Strait of Hormuz. Higher crude oil prices and weak domestic equity sentiment remained relevant pressures. Near-term currency movement was expected to depend on developments in the negotiations, weekend decisions, US employment data, the dollar index, crude oil prices, and the reported increase in foreign exchange reserves.

Energy security through diversified sourcing protected fuel supplies during Hormuz disruption and supports domestic exploration and alternative fuels.
Energy security measures based on diversified crude oil and LPG sourcing, expanded infrastructure, increased domestic LPG production and alternative fuels were presented as maintaining fuel availability during disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Domestic resilience is also linked to support for private deep-water oil and gas exploration, opening offshore acreage, and expansion of compressed biogas and ethanol blending. Ethanol-blended petrol testing identified limited contamination instances rather than a systemic issue, while excise duty reductions were described as cushioning consumers against global fuel-price volatility.

New York, Feb 3 (AP) US stocks rose on Monday following sharp swings that shook financial markets overnight, including tumbles for Asian stocks and then gains in Europe. Gold and silver prices, meanwhile, sank further following their own wild moves.

The S&P 500 added 0.7 per cent and is on track to snap a three-day losing streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 566 points, or 1.2 per cent, with a little less than an hour remaining in trading, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.7 per cent higher.

Stocks of companies that make computer storage helped lead the market, adding to gains from last week following several profit reports that topped analysts' expectations. Airlines and cruise-ship operators were also strong, benefiting from a sharp easing of oil prices.

The center of the action in financial markets was again precious metals, where momentum has suddenly halted after gold's price had roughly doubled in just 12 months.

Gold briefly dropped below USD 4,500 per ounce in the overnight hours, down more than USD 1,000 from its high point reached just last week. It then climbed back above USD 4,800 before settling at USD 4,652.60, down 1.9 per cent from Friday.

Silver's price has been on an even wilder ride recently, and it swung from a 9 per cent loss overnight to a modest gain and back to a loss of 1.9 per cent.

Gold and silver prices had been surging as investors looked for safer things to own amid a wide range of worries, including a Federal Reserve that may be set to become less independent, a US stock market that critics say is expensive, threats of tariffs and heavy debt loads for governments worldwide.

Their prices cratered on Friday, including a 31.4 per cent plunge for silver. Some on Wall Street saw it as a result of President Donald Trump's nomination of Kevin Warsh as the next chair of the Fed. Warsh's reputation as a former Fed governor may have raised expectations among some investors that he may keep interest rates high to fight inflation, which would reduce the need to hide out in gold and silver for protection.

But many on Wall Street are also skeptical of that initial reading and say the expectation from Trump is likely that Warsh will cut interest rates, something the president has been demanding. That could give the economy a boost but also worsen inflation over the long term.

The Fed chair has a big influence on the economy and markets worldwide by helping to dictate where the US central bank moves interest rates. That affects prices for all kinds of investments, as the Fed tries to keep the US job market humming without letting inflation get out of control.

The recent swoons for gold and silver are likely more about the washout for some traders who had borrowed money to bet on metals' prices continuing to soar, rather than about a wholesale change in expectations for demand for metals, according to Darrell Cronk, chief investment officer for Wealth; Investment Management at Wells Fargo On Wall Street, Sandisk leaped 15.1 per cent to lead the S&P 500. The data-storage company added to its 6.9 per cent gain from Friday, after it reported stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It credited demand created by the artificial-intelligence boom, among other things.

That helped offset a 1.9 per cent drop for Nvidia, whose chips are powering much of the world's move into AI technology. The losses were worse in Asia, where AI winners plunged. South Korea's Kospi fell 5.3 per cent from its record for its worst day in almost 10 months after chip company SK Hynix lost nearly 9 per cent.

The Walt Disney Co. fell 6.5 per cent even though the entertainment giant reported a stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It warned of challenges keeping international visitors away from its US theme parks, among other things.

Oil prices dropped more than 4 per cent after Trump told reporters that Iran is “seriously talking to us.” It's a potential signal of improving relations between the two countries, which could keep oil flowing easily around the world.

The drop in oil prices could mean less painful fuel bills for airlines and cruise ships. That helped Carnival steam 8.3 per cent higher, and United Airlines climb 5 per cent.

In the bond market, Treasury yields edged higher after a report said that US manufacturing grew last month, when economists were expecting a contraction. The yield on the 10-year Treasury erased an earlier dip and rose to 4.27 per cent, up from 4.26 per cent late Friday.

Such strong figures could also persuade the Federal Reserve to stay on pause with its cuts to interest rates. The next big set of data that could sway the Fed was supposed to come on Friday, when the US government was due to update the nation's unemployment rate for January. But that report has been postponed because of the partial federal government shutdown.

In stock markets abroad, European indexes rose roughly 1 per cent following a washout in Asia. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 1.3 per cent, while stocks fell 2.2 per cent in Hong Kong and 2.5 per cent in Shanghai. (AP) NB NB
