Foreign exchange intervention and lower crude prices supported rupee appreciation despite a stronger dollar and foreign institutional investor outflows.
Foreign exchange market conditions supported a six-paise appreciation of the rupee against the US dollar at the close of trading. Lower global crude oil prices and Reserve Bank of India intervention to limit significant rupee depreciation contributed to the movement. A marginal strengthening of the US dollar and foreign institutional investor equity outflows continued to exert pressure, while FCNR(B) scheme inflows supported the currency.

Rupee depreciation against US dollar reflects foreign investor outflows and crude supply disruptions, moderated by weaker dollar and oil prices.
Foreign institutional investor outflows and disruptions in global crude oil supplies placed downward pressure on the rupee against the US dollar. A weaker dollar index and lower Brent crude prices moderated the decline. Market commentary anticipated a narrow trading range, with expected Reserve Bank of India protection at the upper end and oil importer, month-end, and importer demand supporting the lower end. Participants also monitored the US Federal Reserve Chair's Jackson Hole speech.

Personal insolvency repayment plans test creditor voting thresholds, valuation safeguards, and limits on commercial review under insolvency law.
Personal insolvency resolution under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code involved approval of a repayment plan providing for payment of Rs 6.25 crore to creditors and Rs 25 lakh towards process costs against admitted creditor claims of about Rs 22,006.57 crore. Objections by dissenting creditors were rejected because they held less than 20 per cent of voting share, while the plan received 80.81 per cent support. Valuation indicated that the personal estate was worth less than the amount offered, and the tribunal declined to replace creditor commercial wisdom or assess settlement adequacy.

Sovereign credit rating stability reflects policy continuity, infrastructure investment, external strength, and fiscal consolidation pressures.
India's sovereign credit rating retained a BBB stable outlook, supported by strong growth, an external balance sheet, stable institutions, policy predictability, and infrastructure investment. Public investment and consumer demand are expected to sustain growth and assist fiscal consolidation. Constraints include weak fiscal performance, elevated government debt and interest burdens, and low per-capita income. Long-term rating support depends on financing infrastructure investment without materially widening the current-account deficit and on reducing the fiscal deficit through stable fiscal and monetary policies.

Sugar import liberalisation and stockholding limits seek to moderate retail prices amid constrained domestic supply and restricted exports.
Sugar price-control measures combine duty-free raw sugar imports, stockholding limits for dealers and bulk consumers, and an export prohibition to address elevated retail prices and curb hoarding. Domestic supply remains constrained by reduced sugarcane output, prior exports and diversion of sugar to ethanol. Net production is estimated below projected domestic demand, while closing stocks are expected to remain limited. Import access, inventory restrictions and export controls therefore operate as market-stabilisation mechanisms.

Women's savings account selection depends on practical benefits, charges, eligibility, and banking needs rather than the account label.
Women's Savings Accounts may provide standard banking facilities together with additional services or benefits for eligible women. Their suitability depends on practical use of digital banking, transfers, payments, alerts, debit-card facilities, accessibility, security features, charges, and minimum-balance conditions. Since regular Savings Accounts may offer comparable facilities, the additional benefits should be assessed against associated costs and conditions. Selection should be based on comparison of eligibility, facilities, balance requirements, benefits, customer support, and authentication safeguards rather than the account's women-focused label alone.

Retirement annuity selection prioritises payout structure, taxation, insurer strength and flexibility over brand comparison for informed retirement decisions.
Retirement planning may combine market-linked accumulation during working years, deferred annuities that lock future guaranteed income, and immediate annuities that convert retirement savings into regular payments. Annuity choice depends on whether the priority is higher income, continuation for a surviving spouse, or return of capital on death. Product comparison should consider market-linked growth versus income certainty, taxation of annuity income at applicable slab rates, insurer strength, and flexibility in deferment, payout frequency and policy loans.

As world order shifts, NZ should ‘spread diplomatic wings’, look at joining BRICS

Auckland, Sep 11 (The Conversation) With the old global order in a heightened state of flux, driven by US President Donald Trump’s attacks on free trade, international organisations and human rights, small states like New Zealand are having to adjust their foreign policies and hedge their bets.

As long-term economic and diplomatic power shifts towards Asia and the wider Indo-Pacific, alternative multilateral groups are now growing in importance.

Foremost among these is the grouping known as BRICS, a maturing—and potentially dominant—centre of global economic power. Whether New Zealand would consider joining is still moot, but the forum already includes major nations vital to this country’s future.

Formed in September 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China (the original BRIC), it had its first annual summit in June 2009, with South Africa joining in December 2010 (thus becoming BRICS).

The core strategic logic of BRICS is based on consensus and solidarity, not coercion, and to gain member benefits via collective strength. As then Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh put it in 2009: We share the vision of inclusive growth and prosperity in the world [… and] we stand for a rule-based, stable and predictable global order.

Having substantial economies, populations, landmasses, and ambitions underpinned this shared goal of a multipolar world, which now seems to be emerging by a different route due to Trump’s isolationist “America first” policies.

Strength in numbers In 2012, motivated by mutual concerns over food and energy security, terrorism and climate change, BRICS members signed the Delhi Declaration, stating: We envision a future marked by global peace, economic and social progress [… and] strengthened representation of emerging and developing countries in the institutions of global governance.

In 2013, BRICS launched the New Development Bank, designed to progressively reform the world’s financial architecture after the global financial crisis of 2008.

Seeking to fund sustainable development and infrastructure projects in developing states, the bank now rivals older Western-based institutions such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The rising significance of BRICS has been accelerated by its recent expansion. In 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates all became members, as did Indonesia in 2025.

Argentina had also agreed to join in 2024 but then pulled out due to the election of its US-oriented populist president, Javier Milei.

The expansion saw BRICS’ share of global GDP rise to 39 per cent in 2023. Member states now account for 48.5 per cent of the planet’s population and 36 per cent of total global territory.

BRICS also accounts for around 72 per cent of the world’s reserves of rare earth minerals, 43.6 per cent of global oil production, 36 per cent of natural gas production and 78.2 per cent of coal production.

By such measures, BRICS is an economic and diplomatic powerhouse. In economic terms, it has been out-ranking the G7 countries (US, Germany, Japan, UK, France, Italy and Canada) since around 2019.

An alternative, not a choice Diplomatically, BRICS members pledge to better synchronise their national policies by meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, IMF, World Bank and G20 summits.

Joining such a body provides an attractive way for countries to enhance their trade and diplomatic bandwidth, as well as hedge against US-inspired instability.

Joining BRICS also comes with potential risks, of course. Any perception of traditional Western alliance systems being undercut could see aid and investment reduced. So far, however, Trump’s threat to impose an extra 10 per cent trade tariff on any countries aligned with BRICS has yet to materialise.

But as economist Stephen Onyeiwu has written, with the exception of Russia and Iran: Most of the countries and partners in BRICS are either allies of Western countries or neutral on global issues. They are unlikely to support decisions or actions that are grossly inimical to Western interests.

Given the current geopolitical situation, New Zealand may well baulk at closer ties with Russia and Iran. But being inside the forum would also allow diplomatic opportunities to press other member states over their actions or policies.

In fact, New Zealand – along with many US allies – joined the Beijing-inspired Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank and signed a Free Trade Agreement with China in 2008. It didn’t suffer any adverse consequences.

New BRICS members can be invited or make a formal request to apply, which is then considered at the next BRICS annual summit. Or they can apply to be a partner country, which is akin to “observer” status.

This allows them to take part in special summits and foreign minister meetings, as well as contribute to official documents and policy statements. But they can’t host meetings or select new members and partners.

Most importantly, joining BRICS would not mean New Zealand needs to leave other multilateral institutions.

Rather, it would be a pragmatic way for Wellington to spread its diplomatic wings and prepare for a future in which Asia and the Indo-Pacific – already the world’s largest economic and military region – will only become more powerful. (The Conversation) SKS
