Opposition states seek lower GST slabs, consumer pass-through, five-year compensation from 2024-25, and simplified MSME compliance.
Eight opposition-ruled states signalled support for reducing GST rate slabs and lowering rates on mass-consumption items, while seeking a mechanism to ensure savings are passed to consumers and five years of compensation using 2024-25 as the base year to offset revenue losses. They also called for full transfer to states of additional levies on sin and luxury goods beyond the proposed 40% and urged simplification of compliance, especially for MSMEs. A national opposition party urged the upcoming GST Council meeting, chaired by the finance minister, to advance genuine cooperative federalism rather than being a headline exercise.
