Five-day banking and equitable performance incentives drive planned nationwide bank union strike amid unresolved pension demands.
United Forum of Bank Unions has proposed nationwide strike action over delayed five-day banking, the performance-linked incentive framework, and unresolved pension demands. Five-day banking was agreed under the 12th Bipartite Settlement/9th Joint Note with extended Monday-to-Friday working hours, but remains pending for implementation. Unions challenge the incentive scheme for departing from a uniform, bank-performance-linked approach and for disproportionately benefiting senior officers. The dispute is under conciliation and pending before the Delhi High Court, while pension updation, a uniform dearness allowance formula, and an old pension scheme option remain unresolved.

Equity market volatility intensified as higher crude prices, geopolitical tensions and tighter monetary expectations weakened domestic investor sentiment.
Indian equity markets closed marginally lower as higher crude oil prices, US-Iran tensions, and expectations of prolonged tight United States monetary policy weakened risk appetite. The phased Closing Auction Session contributed to a late recovery in the benchmark index. Rising crude prices and global bond yields triggered broad-based selling across several domestic sectors, while foreign institutional equity sales and weakness in overseas markets added to pressure despite stronger-than-expected domestic economic growth.

Rupee exchange-rate movement reflects portfolio inflows, growth data and possible central-bank support, while crude oil prices constrain gains.
Foreign-exchange market conditions strengthened the rupee by 28 paise to 94.94 against the US dollar, supported by domestic growth, controlled fiscal slippage and portfolio inflows. Possible Reserve Bank of India intervention was also identified as supportive. Higher crude oil prices, weak domestic equities and hawkish US monetary-policy signals were identified as constraints on further appreciation. Foreign investment flows, stronger-than-expected domestic growth and the fiscal-deficit position remained material factors affecting currency conditions.

Personal insolvency repayment plans: conflicting views on binding dissenting creditors prompted reconsideration through an expanded adjudicatory bench.
National Company Law Tribunal constituted a five-member bench after conflicting views on a personal insolvency repayment plan left no majority position for a formal order. The central issue is whether creditor approval of the plan binds dissenting creditors and extinguishes their claims against the personal guarantor. One view preserved dissenting creditors' independent recovery rights, while another applied the creditor-approved plan uniformly to all creditors. Disagreement also concerns the Adjudicating Authority's power to examine the resolution professional's report of the creditors' meeting.

Rupee exchange-rate support through suspected intervention and FCNR(B) inflows offset pressure from dollar strength and higher crude prices.
Rupee exchange-rate movement reflected a recovery from early losses to close stronger against the US dollar, amid market expectations of Reserve Bank of India support at lower trading levels. Pressure arose from higher US Treasury yields, possible US rate-hike expectations and a broad dollar rally. Suspected intervention, FCNR(B)-related foreign-currency flows and the special USD-INR forex swap facility supported sentiment, while rising crude prices, geopolitical supply risks and foreign institutional equity outflows remained adverse factors.

Measures soon to boost exports; Govt committed to shield industry from unilateral actions: Goyal

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said the government will soon announce measures to boost exports and domestic consumption, underlining its commitment to shield the industry from the adverse impact of unilateral actions by other countries.

The remarks are important as the US has imposed a steep 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods entering America from August 27.

According to exporters, shipments from labour intensive sectors such as shrimp, chemicals, leather and footwear would be hit from these tariffs.

Goyal assured exporters of all support in dealing with the current global uncertainties at the trade front, which were caused by the imposition of high tariffs.

"The government is committed to make sure that all of you do not face any stress or difficulties in managing the current situation emanating from some unilateral actions," Goyal said here at an industry event.

He urged the industry to highlight sectors that may get impacted by these tariffs and need alternative markets.

"We in the commerce ministry, through our Missions, are reaching out to other parts of the world, to look at other opportunities which we can capture. We are also looking at giving a boost to domestic consumption...

"You will soon see the GST council meeting next week... So that the impact of these changes can be felt by all of you very quickly and that can give a quick demand booster to the entire domestic manufacturing sector," the minister said.

The upcoming GST Council meeting, he noted, is expected to provide measures that will quickly stimulate demand and give a strong boost to domestic manufacturing.

The government is in consultation with all the stakeholders, including Indian Missions abroad, for diversification of exports, he said.

"I can assure each one of you that in the days ahead, the government will be coming out with a variety of measures to support every sector, both to expand the domestic outreach and look for complementarities in other markets around the world to expand our global foray so that this year, our exports will exceed last year's exports.

"This year will define our self-confidence," the minister added.

In 2024-25, India's goods and services exports touched an all-time high of USD 825 billion.

Further, he said, India's exports share in the global market is low, so "we do not need to worry" too much about the global uncertainties at the trade front.

If a country wants to do a good trade pact with India, "we are always ready" for that, Goyal said, adding if "someone tries to discriminate against us... I feel that India's 140 crore population has self-confidence and self-respect, keeping that in mind, we will never bow down, nor will we ever be weak, together we will keep moving ahead...

"We will capture new markets... I can say with confidence that this year our exports will be more than last year".

He added that India is an import-dependent economy.

The country, Goyal said, has managed crises such as Covid-19 pandemic and nuclear sanctions successfully in the past.

Addressing construction sector players, he said there is a demand for about one million houses in Australia.

He invited Indian businesses, workers, and experts to seize this opportunity, stating that Australia is open to financial collaboration, technical expertise, and workforce support from India. PTI RR DRR
