Postal operators seek more time and guidance to implement removal of de minimis tariff exemption for low-value imports
The Universal Postal Union notified the US Secretary of State that member postal operators need more time and operational guidance to implement the administration's imminent elimination of the de minimis tariff exemption for low-value imports, a change prompting more than 30 countries' postal services to limit or suspend US-bound parcels valued at or below USD 800. The rule, effective Friday, requires customs clearance and payment of duties (value-based rates often 10-50% or, for six months, an option of flat USD 80-200 per package); limited gift and personal exemptions remain. The UPU is seeking coordination and developing mechanisms to enable posts to collect and remit applicable duties.
